Newport Muster - September 10 2011: But it takes place every year
THE walking festival has taken place ........ read all about it in next month's magazine.
The Newport Muster, is a series of organised walks round Cromwell’s ancient garrison town and its spectacular Ouse Valley.
“We only make a small charge to cover basic costs and only from adults,” said Walk Chairman Steve Williams, “but we do need all walkers of all ages to have their details registered because we can then record whether or not they complete their chosen course.”
Four walks were sign-posted on the day stretching 3, 6, 8 or 15 miles and latest setting-off times are staggered from 10am, but Mr Williams explained: “More people than ever turned up to the Muster this year and we suceeded in ensuring that there was little congestion and frustration for our walkers as possible.”
All entrants get a walk card, an official 28-page souvenir Guide, and a certificate when they finish. Medals and polo shirts were on sale at the Muster Shop.
Extra attractions this year included a bouncy castle and a Bar-b-Q.
The four courses, named Picnic, History -1, History -2, and The Challenge, each include a lap of Bury Field, an 180-acre area of Common Land bordered by the beautiful River Ouse that has been used by residents of Newport Pagnell for 1000 years.
Organised by volunteers who call themselves The Levellers (another Civil War term), the Muster’s aims include: providing an opportunity to improve health and fitness, increasing local knowledge of the town and its history, and encouraging community participation.
Prizes were on offer for the largest team, oldest and youngest walkers, most-raised in sponsorship and best fancy dress. Find out more in next month's Phonebox.......
